For my lovelies, i.e., my grandchildren...
Dear Grandchildren, Dear Each One of you!
I think about writing letters to each of you, but it seems like such a mammoth job to write eighteen letters. There are eighteen of you, you see. Even if I wrote three a week...that seems easy enough...it would take me ______ weeks to send a letter to each one of you. (You have to fill in that blank. 😉) Then, after I write the letters, I'd have to put them in an envelope and mail them. Before I'd mail them, I would have to put a first-class stamp on them. First-class stamps are needed for a one-ounce letter. First class postage is $.78 an ounce! If I sent letters which weighed one ounce, and I mailed eighteen of them it would cost ______.
So, I couldn't put a thick letter in the envelope...I mean it couldn't be many pages long. It couldn't even have a package of stickers along in the envelope! It couldn't even have a stick of gum in the envelope! (Do you know what a stick of gum is?) If the letter was four pages thick or if I put a couple sticks of gum in the envelope, it would probably weigh two ounces! Then I'd have to pay _______ for each letter! If I mailed eighteen two-ounce letters, I'd have to pay double the price! That would cost me__________!!!
Please, sweet children, don't even ask your parents for a stick of gum. It is a tasty little morsel that might rot your teeth. I have seen some of you chewing gum, so I know some of you know what it is. Well, they do make sugar-free gum now but the awful stuff they use for sweetener tastes terrible and will probably make your stomach hurt...so don't even bother.
Thinking of gum reminds me of a little something to tell you. When I was a little gal, my mom chewed Doublemint gum. It was made by a company called Wrigley's. I think it is still made. My dad liked JuicyFruit, another gum of Wrigley's and there was also one called Spearmint. Those three gums and bubblegum are the only ones I remember ever having...except once in a blue moon we got a tootsie roll pop and I believe they had a little gum in the middle of them. Most of us liked the Doublmint or JuicyFruit I think.
I had eight siblings...so how many children were in my family? ______ We didn't get gum very often, so I don't know what the others liked but I liked Juicy Fruit. Mostly I had Doublemint though if we ever had any because it was Mom's favorite and was usually in her purse. Her purse always smelled like Doublemint gum.
We certainly couldn't be choosy if we did get a piece of gum. We got what was there. We had to ask for it each time and when we were fortunate enough to get a piece of gum it would be a half of a stick. That's right. We would beg for a piece of gum and Mom would tear a stick of gum in half for each of us. She couldn't afford many pleasures, so it was good that she had that one. Once in a while there was gum in the kitchen cabinet...up high so we never ever got it ourselves. We always asked for it. In fact, we never got any treats by foraging. Anything between meals was asked for.
Oh! I had a choice of typesets to use while typing. I looked for one that might look a little bit like my handwriting, but while looking I came across this one and the name of it is "playfair", so I knew it was perfect! Ha, ha. You all are always supposed to play fair, right?
I hope this blog of writing to you keeps us connected to each other. In fact, you can even make comments at the end of each blog so I can hear from you, too! Some of you older lovelies might want to write what some of your younger siblings say if they are too young to write just yet. That would be lovely...almost as lovely as you yourself. We learn a lot about people with words, don't we? So, I will learn more about you, too, if you write back now and then. Of course, since we have phones, you could just call me but sometimes it's nice to write things down. Words are so important. Even Jesus told us about how we should watch out what we say.
